Feminism and the Philosophy of Language
23.08 - 28.08
Organizers:
Sophia Arbeiter, Heike Behnke, Barbara Haas, Conny Knieling, Karoline Paier

The second international Summer Reading School took place at the University of Vienna on the topic "Feminism and the Philosophy of Language". We were honoured to receive more than 120 applications, which allowed us to pick a diverse group from three continents with various backgrounds in philosophy.
On the first two days of the Summer School relevant topics in the Philosophy of Language were introduced, such as the semantics-pragmatics distinction, speech-act theory and implicatures. In the following days the focus was put on the application of these tools to specifically feminist philosophy of language: speech as harm, speech as action, the politics of language and pornography. The successful event was only made possible by our generous financial support, which allowed us to also encourage applications from individuals with financial concerns.
The public evening lectures were given by:
Prof. Marina Sbisà (University of Trieste)
Prof. Lynne Tirrell (University of Connecticut

The first international Summer Reading School took place at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel on the topic "Feminism and the Philosophy of Science". To our knowledge it was the first event of this kind, and we received many more applications than places to fill. Applications were open for women* philosophers at all levels of their studies, thus the participants had both B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. backgrounds. The participants also came from more than 10 countries and different areas of philosophy, such as Logic, Ancient Philosophy, and German Idealism. The event was made possible by our generous financial support, which allowed us to also encourage applications from individuals with financial concerns.
The public evening lectures were given by:
Prof. Dr. Christine Blättler (University of Kiel)
Mag. Lona Gaikis (Akademie der bildende Künste Wien)
Prof. Marianne Janack (Hamilton College, NY)
